the 'whatever happened to...' post

Music, movies, entertainment, etc. Because James wanted it (and seems like a pretty good idea)

according to wiki:

On September 18, 2003 someone claiming to be Griffin posted on a message board the following message [1]:

Glad someone remembers me. Still living in Dallas. Not doing any music at the moment. Actually I've been working on getting my flight instructor certificate. Aviation is a very cool antidote to the frustrations of the music biz. I guess one of these days I'll get some more music together, just can't say when yet. Take care, -Mark G. a/k/a mc 900 ft jesus

There is a Mark Griffin listed as Chief Pilot on a web site [2] for Soar Hawaii, but it is not clear if that is the same Griffin.

-- woo, that was a good day in 2003 :D

I saw him at the (tiny) Xpo Lounge one night, playing trumpet with a band of older guys -- I don't even think they had a name.

That was probably in 2001 or 2002.

Indeed.

KTCU trivia for James: do you remember Jay's on-air name?

No. I only know him because he's good friends with Chip. Or pseudo good friends anyway. I've never really seen him without a beer in his hand. I remember he dated this uber-indie girl that also worked with Chip and I at the ghetto Blockbuster, but I can't remember her name despite having tons of classes with her.

MC 900 is a helluva trumpet player. He also used to sell me records from behind the counter at VVV...

Mia? He also dated my friend Marya.

Did you work at the Blockbuster/Sound Warehouse on Berry?

Yeah that's her. And yeah, I worked at that one. We used to drive out the gangstas by listening to Hum and Swervedriver records at a volume of 11. I didn't know he dated Marya. I think pretty much all of the guys in band wanted to date Marya.

i'm pretty sure he suddenly stopped having confidence in his songwriting, then went to bulgaria and recorded a live album of eastern european music he saw there and is now happily living in atlanta doing art or something. with no intentions of starting up NMH again :(

did he join olivia tremor control onstage in NY for a comeback show or something? I can't be bothered to wiki.

The funny (sad? ironic?) thing is that none of those guys ever asked her out! She only went out with a couple of guys the whole time at TCU -- and probably only 2 or 3 from campus.

Maybe that's why no one asked me out when I was there either. . . just wayyyyy too pretty and intimidating.
;)

Jay chased her for months and months and they finaly went out for a little bit. And then again after we graduated. He was a scary amount more in love with her than she was with him.

You know you are old school when you used to shop at VVV.
I still have a VVV brown paper bag somewhere.

My mom used to take us out there on special trips. It ruled.

She was WAY intimidating. Not on purpose, but that combination of brains and beauty was more than most could handle. All they could do was stand and admire. And they did a lot of that.

I wasn't too scared, but I never did, because I either had a girlfriend, was drunk, or both. Plus, I wasn't as nice then as I am now. Actually I was but I had to come off hardcore due to certain circles I ran with. It's ok because I ended up ok out of the deal.

We probably have had this conversation, because every time I think about her, that's what I remember. Lots of guys too scared to ask her out. LOTS of them. If she's still single, I know some guys....
