my ipod is broke

Postby stephen » Tue May 02, 2006 1:04 pm

and i don't know what to do.

i've got the 5r's. i've updated every single thing i possibly can. my ipod just wont reset itself like it's meant too. itunes wont recognize it and it just flips between the ipod logo and the folder with the exclamation mark on it each time i attempt to reset.

i'm pretty sure it's the ipod and not the computer stuff. how can i reformat my ipod if nothing will recognize it and it wont even do anything apart from go between the logo and the stupid folder with exclamation mark.

does anyone know how to get the computer to recognize my ipod? i don't think it's in disk mode, to get out of disk mode i have to reset and i've done this about 3 times now to check and it just goes funny.

it's gone back to normal now, except it wont be seen on my computer.

should i reformat my ipod?

I had that problem a while back, and it just got worse from there. I made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store, and she took one look at it and gave me a new one.

How old is your iPod, and did you buy it from the retailer?

most ipod owners i know have told me there's about a 6 month life span for one of those things, and apple knows it and just replaces them. makes you wonder how much more cheaply they could be selling them...

perhaps cheaply enough for me to afford one.

Ipods are pieces of junk, I have replaced mine countless times now, (at least 5, maybe 6) the last one to go out on me had a similiar problem, the guy at the genius bar tried to revive it but said that the directory was corrupted and nothing could be done (damn it Jim!)

Anyway, it was a month out of warranty, but still gave me a replacement for a 30 dollar fee! As long as they will keep replacing it, I'll keep bringing it back. I recommend the extended warranty if you can afford the 60 bucks extra!

That's about how long mine lasted. I've got two more years worth of "replacing credit," though, I guess, so I'll figure out what other kind of player to get at that time, when the market will hopefully be more competetive.

Mine lasted 3 years before it officially died- no problems until then. I'm hoping that my new one will last a bit longer, as it'll be a while before it's filled!

It was 3rd gen I think- 15GB. It got used a lot, and (up until it died) had been very reliable. The hard drive failed in the end, I tried to get it up and running but no luck, and the man at the Apple store confirmed my suspicions- dead as a dodo. I've still got it though- anyone got any ideas what I can do with a dead iPod? I'm sure I can do something cool with it, just not sure what!

Put it on a chain and wear it around your neck a la Flavor Flav?

I felt like a dinosaur because I brought my portable CD player to the computer lab at school while working on a project.

Seriously, I was the only one in there without a tiny mp3 player.

My 60GB iPod Photo has been just jim dandy for well over a year. Good charge length and the like. My bluetooth headphones from logitech, however, are complete shit. I'm awaiting my 4th pair from the fuckers right now.

ugh.. i had the same problem posted on the old forum. i wish i'd kept that post. i LOVED my ipod, and it was loyal and 2 years old, but took one too many tumbles. it is now in the hands of a friend who used to work at apple, and he is trying to see if he can get it reformatted. but like you said, thats hard, because the computer wont recognize it it'll just alternate between those things and all that jazz.
so sad!
