UK: A Future Nation Of Islam?

Last week, I met a couple from the UK who were trying to emigrate to the US. They said the UK was being overun by Muslims and Tony Blair was to blame. They went onto say that, in the next 10 to 20 years, the UK (and most of Europe) would succumb to Islam.

I know there have been problems, but is it really that bad in the UK?

Honestly, if people spent less time reading the Daily Mail scare stories and more time being, well, rational, then maybe they wouldn't spout rot like that. I can see this couple having similar problems in the US, which has sizable populations of all sorts of different religions/nationalities.

That sounds like a Daily Mail story, verbatim.

My wife knows someone who works for the Mail; she does photo archiving or something of the sort, at any rate, she gets pictures from the archives for prints. When the London bombings happened, and they figured out they were from Leeds she was instructed to find pictures of Leeds in the 50's and 60's, with "no blacks please" to juxtapose with photos of today. Pretty typical of that publication which is why most of us call it the Daily Hate Mail.

As for the UK being "run over" by Islam? Doubtful. Sure, there are about 1.5 million here. Maybe 2 million. But there are 60 million people on this island, and that's still a pretty small amount. To be honest, I'm more concerned about the Pentecostal Christians coming over here; they're far more scary.

My best work mate is Muslim, and pretty devout. He goes to Mosque, eats halal, and does try to live life by the Qu'ran. But he's not out to convert anyone, and if he is, he does it by example and not words. He likes his sport and gets along with most people. There have been a few people that have worked there that have seemingly treated him (and two other colleagues who are Muslim) a bit bad. I don't quite get that, but there is some pretty extreme racism engrained in some of the people here. That's why the BNP exists. Which is sad, but that line of thought is pretty bad to me.

But Europe getting run over by Muslims? Doubtful.

Well then... I guess they're in for a big surprise when they move here to Southern California and find out we've been taken over by the Mexicans.

(Their premise did seem strange, but they came off as pretty normal in every other way. So I had to ask. And let's face it... even though BBC America and NPR may give a clearer picture about what's happening outside the US than say... FOX News, we Americans are still sorely deficient when it comes to WORLD news that isn't all about us.)

And as for news, you are correct. Your "World News", by any of the US outlets, is complete and utter rubbish.

There was some talk after the recent cartoon events that Muslims are now Denmark's largest minority and the ever-polite Danish aren't willing to come down on the less tolerant element of that community because that wouldn't be tolerant. I didn't really know what to make of that. I also believe it is a long standing French tradition (re Algeria) to blame internal problems on Muslim immigrants.

i think they actually blame non-aryans as they are currently beating jews to death a la matthew shepard and burning synagogues. and i know they were talking about outlawing kippot (jewish head covering) and burkas in public schools. did that ever happen or was it just talk?

The bigger uproar, at least in the news, was concerning the muslim head-scarves. I can't find an article about it dating more recently than 2003, so I would assume it did not go through. Isn't is the logical conclusion of political correctness (re Vonnegut) that all expression would eventually be banned?
