Recommendations about how to go about it/where to go? Obviously I'd have to go to Dallas to visit people.

Having been to both San Fran and NYC, I do highly recommend visiting. Two totally different cities with completely opposite personalities! Make sure you have plenty of time...San Francisco and NYC are on my personal list, but not having been there I can't in good faith recommend them.
Thanks Mere, the offer is very much appreciated. Our spare bed is your spare bed if you do come to Dallas town.
Best way to see it? There are some train lines if you have the time.
Otherwise, check out some of the less expensive airlines like Southwest and even American Airlines, and see where they have cheapie flights.
I recommend -
Chicago, IL
Seattle, WA
New Orleans, LA
They would give you really different looks at the U.S.

the train is fun, not the quickest though. I took it to Austin once, a normal 2.5 - 3 hour drive ended up being a 6 hour train ride. I did meet some really interesting people, they were a step above the greyhound(bus) set. Thanks Mere, the offer is very much appreciated. Our spare bed is your spare bed if you do come to Dallas town.

New York would be really cool, but maybe a bit daunting by myself. And yes, OKC. But that would be to visit friends.
This is what I get for lending On the Road to this girl I've met and have her rave about how fantastic it is!
I never even thought of taking the train across America, it would certainly be an interesting way of seeing the country.
And Sun Studio where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis recorded!!Memphis to eat bbq and visit Graceland, the home of the King of Rock n Roll...ELVIS
I would recommend Memphis as well just because it's so iconic. But I wouldn't bother staying long. And Sun Studio where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis recorded!!
It's short but fun.
