dallas area museums?

Postby katie » Mon Feb 16, 2009 11:32 pm

my friend amelia is coming into town this weekend, and since she's a visual artist, i want to take her to a museum. so what are your favorites? i don't know anything about dallas museums and haven't been to any myself. preferably inexpensive 'cause i'm a low-budget bitch. she'd be more interested in something quirky and modern than seeing the old classics.

thanks, friends!

Don't listen to Roach. The two must sees in DFW are the Kimball in Fort Worth and the Nasher downtown.

I love the Kimbell.

And I've wanted to see the Nasher since it opened but I haven't really tried. I guess I should.

Check this out -- guide to free museum visits.

I also noticed they left out that the African American Museum in Fair Park in free for parties of 10 or fewer.

So, in my opinion the Kimball is definately a must-see, but it's also on the more traditional side, so based on what you said you'd wanted I'd recommend the MOMA in Ft Worth too, buuuut...

They're like 100 yards apart so you might as well hit both. The Kimball permanent exhibit is smallish but free, and aside from the art, the buiding itself is worth seeing. It's really a unique space and uses natual light in really interesting ways. The building might be the most modern thing abut the Kimball, actually... Also the gardens behind the Kimball had pretty sculptures and landscaping.

The Crowe Collection (Asian Art I think) in Dallas is really small but also free, so there's that...The DMA and the Nasher are both ok (I pefer the Nasher) but they're also both fairly expensive.
