i'm okay with not being able to smoke in apartments. you're renting, you don't own, and the person who owns the building should be able to set the rules. but in a condo? you own that! come onnnnnn. and banning smoking outside is crazy to me. where are you supposed to go if you can't smoke in your house, your work, or outside? i know smoking's bad for you, but it's a choice each individual should be allowed to make.oh yeah it's been happening all around CA. I mean you can go rent a place and they can tell you it's a non smoking building. The idea being that you basically share ventilation between apts. And a non smoker could get your 2nd smoke. Also I bet it helps with insurance rates for bldg owners too.![]()
Pretty soon, you won't even be able to smoke walking down the street. You can't at a bus stop or ATM line now.

you may own a condo, but it isn't like a house. it's like an apt. shared walls, ventilation etc. sure glad i gave it up, it's becoming way to restrictive.i'm okay with not being able to smoke in apartments. you're renting, you don't own, and the person who owns the building should be able to set the rules. but in a condo? you own that! come onnnnnn. and banning smoking outside is crazy to me. where are you supposed to go if you can't smoke in your house, your work, or outside? i know smoking's bad for you, but it's a choice each individual should be allowed to make.oh yeah it's been happening all around CA. It seems like it's sort of in the same vein; social responsibility / obligation to others v. personal freedom...to your second question: that debate was a few years back and i'm not sure i feel the same way about it anymore, honestly. and i don't see how the two issues have any kind of relation, let alone a conflict. can you elaborate?

I've never lived in or even heard of an apartment with shared ventilation, and I'm certain my condo didn't have it. And a condo is like a house - like a house that you co-own. The people you share walls with are a part of the association, and the association owns the building. Only the association should be able to make a rule about what legal actiuvities can be conducted within the walls.you may own a condo, but it isn't like a house. it's like an apt. shared walls, ventilation etc. sure glad i gave it up, it's becoming way to restrictive.
I was on my condo board for years and have some real problems with municiple legislation that treats condos like apartments. I could tell you about how much bullshit it is, but the details would bore you.
And I still didn't see anything about that law that related to living spaces.

i feel there's a difference between obligation towards most people and obligation towards your children. but yeah, in general, i'd say i really believe in personal freedom and personal responsibility. as in, i should be allowed to do mostly whatever i want (obviously within reasonable limits) but that if i fuck up doing them, i should generally be held responsible. It seems like it's sort of in the same vein; social responsibility / obligation to others v. personal freedom...to your second question: that debate was a few years back and i'm not sure i feel the same way about it anymore, honestly. and i don't see how the two issues have any kind of relation, let alone a conflict. can you elaborate?
but i think it's kind of ridiculous if i'm paying 200k for a condo in some places, i can't smoke inside it. you own the inside of your condo. the outside/common areas are the only places they should be able to tell you what to do. i find it really doubtful that someone in another condo (separated by walls and halls and what have you) could be affected by your smoking in a seriously detrimental way to their health. maybe i'm naive and just haven't looked into it enough but i doubt someone's getting lung cancer from the guy smoking down the hall in his condo. tell me i can't smoke in the hallway, sure. got no problem with that whatsoever. but inside? like, in my bedroom? guh. i just can't get past it.

Techno music on sunday morning should be banned before cigarette smoking... at least in my complex.
