katie looks like a hippie with her natty dreaded rats nest of hair, but she, as far as I know, is not a jam band fan. and I've seen her bathe, at least once, since moving in. I'll keep her away from san fran, to make sure she doesn't have any of those influences.

hippies don't jetset. fact. they tour. sure I'm all for a concert on the other side of the world...because it's also a vacation. sorry the mindset is different. hippies will travel town to town to see some lame crap band (my opinion) and stand outside trying to get someone to give them a free fucking ticket when they should probably just call home, take a batch and let their middle class parents give them money. I'm all for seeing your fave band even a couple times on tour...I do not like the rest of the stuff that comes along with being a smelly (or not ) hippie.

sorry katie, I spent the 90s with the hippies to my dismay. I've got LOADS of ammo against them.

I am comfortable with the way "hippie" has been co-opted by current pop culture. I think it degrades the hippies of christmas past.

I believe rubbs left out a "don't" there, and I for one agree with him.

Jackie, I know the group you're talking about. They're more annoying than any other group I've come across but I'll tell you this. They're not hippies. Not even close. This has been co-opted by "trustafarians" who attempt, badly, to hold to an ideal they don't even really understand. Yes, they do "tour", but most hippies I know would be more worried about the environmental impact of such an activity; these people don't. They might dress the dress, but hippies they're not.

And for the record I love both The Grateful Dead and Phish. And also Moe. and Widespread Panic. I think though, because I'm in it for the music and not the environment, it's different. At those shows, you see a lot of people who go to keep up appearances, similar to the indie rock scene in anytown, or any scene in any town, to be honest.

i was attempting to be at least moderately humorous with the jetset comment. it was ironic. because you obviously aren't a hippie and have no desire to be.

ditto to james and rubbs: it doesn't sound like you're describing hippies at all. it sounds like you're talking about fake bum douchebags who want to piss off mommy and daddy by not taking showers and smoking pot. i used to yell at these people in harvard square. the kids who would sit there with ironic signs and collecting change, when you know damn well they were going to harvard on their parents' dime and just rebelling. but that is NOT a hippie. that is a douchebag.

i'm sorry to be reacting so passionately on this, but some of the things you are saying are really insulting to me, so yeah. i gotta say something about it.

i remember in the 1990s it was the fratboys, not the 'hippies,' who were really into the jam-band thing. i called 'em 'short-haired hippies' and they were usually the kids of hippies-turned-yuppies, trying to live out what they assumed were their parents' experiences. personally, i didn't really care about any of that. if you like it, more granola for ya.

the only time the 'jam band' thing bugged me was when there was an attempt to turn James's, ahem, former band into one. did it succeed? dunno. doesn't seem to, at least from my perspective. i do remember that at the store i worked at and the shows i went to and worked on, the same people going to phish and widespread panic and leftover salmon shows were also going to TD shows. (and there was something surreal walking past a sorority bar at 1:30 AM and hearing the whole bar singing "I Got A Girl") and wasn't there an aborted Spree/Gomez/Guster tour during your time?

it just seemed to me that weed + disposable income + wild shows with lots of improvisation = jam band culture.

I can bitch about whatever I want.

yes to james' point it's more a trustfund kid thing. but annoying none the less. they call themselves hippies...I just called them annoying.

and katie, I don't think having dreads makes one a hippie, nor have I ever gotten the impression from you that you subscribe to that way of life...not even a true hippie way of life (whatever that means). but we've never actually met, so you never know someone really until you meet or walk a mile in their shoes.

I'm merely expressing how i feel about a group of people that seriously annoyed me to no end. sorry I don't mean to purposely offend you or anyone else,.,.,perhaps I should write a dear forum thread....nah screw it. I meant what I said about those "hippies from the 90s"

fair enough, fair enough. i just knee-jerk when it seems like someone automatically equates dreads to dirty, or even dreads to hippie. i spend a LOT of time explaining to people that yes, i do take showers; yes, i use soap and shampoo; no, i don't have bugs in my hair; no, i don't use castor oil/eggs/mayonnaise/wax to keep them together; no, i don't worship the grateful dead or phish; etc, etc, etc. sure, lots of dreadheads aren't me, but that's why they smell like ass and wind up cutting their dreads off cause they're moldy.
