my point, and i hope it came across sufficiently, was to call BS on julies excuse for not having the show. the christmas show WAS a tradition and the fans expected it to be back this year. many fans had made plans to come in from out of town, which is a major undertaking.

as justin said, the show could have easily been booked at a multitude of venues around town.

Why? What's the point?
the christmas show WAS a tradition and the fans expected it to be back this year.
Why? They didn't do it last year. What made you think this year would be any different?

All this jibber-jabber caused me to have a Spree dream last night.!
WEIRD! me too! i dreamed that i saw tim doing blow in a bathroom in a club in nyc and i started yelling at him that he has kids and a brain and he was being a moron etc etc and he started crying. it was so odd and one of those really detailed dreams, like i can remember the outfit i was wearing and what song was playing and everything.

Because I think it had been reported that there would be a show this year? Though it seems to have been reported a bit unofficially--someone taking a brief conversation w/tim as a solid fact.

Which, of course, i could understand would cause people to be peeved, yet not necessarily the speekers' fault, as gossip shouldn't be taken as fact....

It was a report from Gail that Tim told her they were doing it - not the most reliable info, and regardless, it's their prerogative to do a show or not. It's not as though there haven't been opportunities to see them - they've been touring almost constantly since summer. Even at our busiest, we were never gone nearly as much as they are now when I was still there.

I just don't get all the fucking belly aching, like people are taking it personally that there's not a Christmas show this year... again.

The one thing that I can really understand are those people who were going to travel/take off time from work. That's just frustrating.

Speaking of Christmas shows...sort of...I finally saw the Happy Days episode where Fonzie jumps the shark in its entirety....I'd seen that scene but never the whole thing...it was everything I thought it would be and more.

In all of my years in the band, there is one thing I learned that sticks with me: there are no guarantees. Ever. I can understand why people would be sad but really, they didn't do one last year, and quite honestly, for them, notice that it's not going to happen this early is pretty amazing. Everyone should instead buy the Sufjan Christmas Box set, or if you have it, buy it for someone else. I've never seen something unite generations like that set...

does anyone know if the song happy days was recorded specifically for the show, or did the show take the pre-existing song for its theme? inquiring minds want to know.

it was originally Bill Haley & The Comets' "Rock Around the Clock" for about the first two or three years.

then it was "Happy Days"
i want to say it was written by Barry Manilow

but the theme song was a minor hit itself..

answered my own question:

[The show's closing theme song in season 1 & 2 was "Happy Days," written by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel. According to SAG, this version was performed by Jimmy Haas (lead vocal), Ron Hicklin, Stan Farber, Jerry Whitman and Gary Garrett (backing vocals), plus studio musicians.
From seasons 3-10, this replaced "Rock Around the Clock" at the beginning of the show. Released as a single in 1976 by Pratt & McClain, "Happy Days" cracked the Top 5. The show itself finished the 1976-77 television season #1, ending the five-year Nielsen reign of All in the Family.]

I used to LOVE Happy Days when I was little -- especially the song!

We actually have a cassette tape somewhere of me singing it at age 4. My mom used to let me record tapes on our stereo system while she cooked dinner, and I loved the microphone!

you know KFWD channel 52 airs Happy Days at 5:30pm each weekday. followed by that lovable war camp gang on Hogan's Heroes.
