I eat meat but I have thought about stopping on and off for a long time for environmental reasons. Check out Diet for a Small Planet by Frances Moore Lappe.
How does Diet for a Small Planet relate to Diet for a New America? I enjoyed it but it actually put me off non-organic milk more than meat. We used to go through several gallons of milk every week at home. So many hormones.

I think our relation to food is an interesting facet of the "modern" condition. I don't think traditional societies ever question that to sustain their lives requires the sacrifice of other lives, usually animal, sometimes human. Nowadays, that becomes guilt, mostly over the methods of production rather than the actual life that has been taken.

Just kidding. Sarah's pretty and doesn't have excess facial hair.

i'd love to live on or near a farm where i can eat healthy eggs from worm-eating chickens and where the pigs are allowed to root and the cows eat grass and live forever.

dal "the same farm where every 6 year old's dog gets sent" ya
A lady I work with has her own chickens -- a lot of rare breeds too. She brings the eggs in to work and sells them for next to nothing. The price just covers the cost of feeding the chickens.

I swear those eggs taste so much better than anything you can get in the store.

My favorite 80 year-old ball-busting English prof said one time, "I am old enough to remember when it didn't matter what you ate."
I don't think traditional societies ever question that to sustain their lives requires the sacrifice of other lives, usually animal, sometimes human.
True, because there really was / is no question; they didn't / don't have the options we do. If I thought my sustenance required the sacrific of other lives, I wouldn't be vegetarian either.

its definitely the method. i've always said if i lived on a farm and I knew how my animals were treated i wouldn't be a vegetarian. the article i read said that raising chickens for egg production didnt occur to anybody until the great depression. then some woman in boston started raising a lot of chickens and selling the eggs for a profit. if every family had a chicken or two, or at least knew someone with chickens, we could have plently of eggs without any (or many) chickens being ill-treated.

the way pro-life people talk about stem cell research is the way i think of factory farms. youre giving something life only to kill it. it's just too sad. youre basically saying that life has no merit at all except to sure humans. humans need protein but thats not why cows and chickens exist. thats why protein powder exists.

Something about PETA that's been bothering me:

In the pets section of craigslist, there used to be a little disclaimer about giving away animals for free. It said that PETA recommends that you never give away an animal for free because of this guy who would answer all those "free to good home" ads and then torture the animals. It really sucks that someone would do that, but I don't think it's a widespread problem. And personally, I think it's ridiculous to pay someone $50+ for a mutt puppy that hasn't been fixed or vaccinated when you can go to a shelter and get a fixed and vaccinated puppy for the same price. So I think it's doing more harm than good because people who can't get rid of a litter of puppies will probably take them to the pound.

I'm confused...is anyone actually supporting PETA here? I was under the impression everyone thought they were bonkers on one level or more...

I wonder, if you own a ridiculously expensive fur coat, can you have it insured against PETA protestors?

I'm sure, as is the case with any valuable, you can get a rider to your property insurance on it. I would imagine it would cover the red paint that may get thrown upon it.
