Remeber This Awesome TPS show?

Music, movies, entertainment, etc. Because James wanted it (and seems like a pretty good idea)

Not to beat a dead horse (pun intended), but PETA's stance on cruelty-free slaughter.

They don't think it's very cool to have pets, either.

why be nice to an animal right before you slaughter it? the meat still tastes the same. probably tastes better if the animal is tortured.
yeah, it's called veal and its revolting (morally).

i liked this quote (found in a related article)

"In a related matter, God designed cows to eat grass. He did not design them to stand around in some corporate feedlot all day stuffing themselves with grain. “Have you ever seen a cow plant corn, wait around for it to grow, harvest it and then eat it?” Bolton asks pointedly. “No. You have not.”"

touche, Bolton.

:-( reading about chickens having their beaks burned makes me shudder.

I don't think being omnivorous, as human beings naturally are, is antithetical to supporting animal rights. No one thinks the lion is being cruel for hunting down and eating the antelope - it's just his nature. As humans with superior intellect we can make the choice to eat what we want, and the animals are really at our mercy. Thus it is our responsiblity to treat them with some measure of respect.

All that being said, deep down I really don't care how many animals suffered to assure that my children will never have polio, diptheria, smallpox, tetanus, etc etc etc.

It's a dilemma.

I was thinking about this on my way in to work today (rainy long-ass commute = highway boredom). We all know that most domesticated housepet type animals, by way of genetic heritage, could never ever be sustainable in the wild. By this reasoning, is PETA supporting genocide? I think yes.

So then, would it be more humane to eat your pet, or turn him loose and let a coyote eat him in the woods next week?

methinks that PETA's less concerned about "animal rights" as they are about power and control.

i've heard rumors that PETA doesn't really mind killing animals if it supports their causes. remember those horrible 'caught on tape' animal slaughters that came out a few months ago, which shows people just cruelly and insanely killing animals left and right just for fun, in a way that seemed rather psychotic?

why do i have a feeling that those 'butchers' were really PETA members in disguise?

Yeah I guess, but the "~cide" part indicates murder; they're really just advocating the defacto elimination of certain species.

Which is totally different.

;)

I really wasn't trying to guilt you, Dalya. I was just trying to make the point that the PETA folks are nutjobs. I really think they give vegetarians a bad name; their stances on a lot of issues serve to widen the gap of understaning, not bridge it.

Because you think radical liberals are inherently foolish at best and malicious at worst?

This is exactly what I mean by PETA widening the gap.

no, i mean it's because all the PETA folks I have met in my life have been so fucking out of touch with reality that killing a chicken here or there to discredit the poultry industry and portray them as cruel and barberous people (sp?) is perfectly okay, as long as it serves them well. these people want control, pure and simple. they care not about choice.

I really don't think it's neccesary to make up stories about the brutality of the slaughterhouse industry; I think maybe believing that the stories are invented makes it easier for people to sleep / eat / whatever at night.

But then again, if it makes you feel better, more power to you. After all, you could be right.

I guess.
