True, true. This may be the only life...unfortunately for some.the great nothingnessSo where will you end up in the afterlife then?well, i don't believe in heaven.
(the question does presuppose that you believe in an afterlife. That might be the issue right there)

judaism doesnt really deal with the afterlife, but there are a couple of things it says about it. 1: everyone goes to purgatory for a while, longer or shorter depending on how you lived (but no one goes forever) 2: there's some ambiguous line that says something about being united with god when you die, so some people think thats "heaven" but others think you become part of god or learn from god 3: most jews believe in reincarnation, so even if you go to "heaven" it is just for a while, therefore its not really heaven in the christian sense.
but in any case, i was raised not thinking about the afterlife, so no matter how jewish i consider myself, i don't really care what happens to "me" later, because i think you lose your identity when you die. its not like my soul will remember itself as dalya, it will remember the different things that affected it in this life in its next life as whoever. in any case, i wasn't taught to be afraid of hell when i was little, so i dont base my actions on whether or not i will be punished for them. the punishment is feeling bad in this life.
yadda yadda i could go on forever about how i hate the heaven/hell bullshit.
p.s. i really want to see jesus camp. has anyone else seen it?

maybe its just me, but i think if youre accepting jesus in prison it's probably not sincere and you're just afraid of going to hell. is fear of going to hell enough to "save" you? i'm sure there are lots of chirstians who truly repent once they're convicted, especially on death row, but i'd guess at least half are just doing it out of fear. are you still saved in that case? (according to the most liberal denomination i guess. i know in catholicism you'd have to do 7 million hail marys to get saved)

I agree, being saved just coz you're scared may not being saved at all.maybe its just me, but i think if youre accepting jesus in prison it's probably not sincere and you're just afraid of going to hell. is fear of going to hell enough to "save" you? i'm sure there are lots of chirstians who truly repent once they're convicted, especially on death row, but i'd guess at least half are just doing it out of fear. are you still saved in that case? LOL about the hail marys.
So do Jews have a prayer/mantra for redemption or apology?

religion is designed to be used as a burning salve against fear. that is its reason.I agree, being saved just coz you're scared may not being saved at all.maybe its just me, but i think if youre accepting jesus in prison it's probably not sincere and you're just afraid of going to hell. is fear of going to hell enough to "save" you? i'm sure there are lots of chirstians who truly repent once they're convicted, especially on death row, but i'd guess at least half are just doing it out of fear. are you still saved in that case? frog"spiritual faith, however, is a different story - in my hilarious opinion"gy
yom kippur is the day of attonement. between rosh hashanah and yom kippur you have 10 days to appolagize for all your misdeeds from the past year and seek forgiveness from people. youre supposed to appolagize sincerely to someone 3 times. if they don't forgive you, then the "sin" is on their conscience after that. on yom kippur you fast for 24 hours and pray pretty much the whole time, besides sleeping.
i don't know if youve ever heard the prayer or an allusion to the prayer that talks about how people will die. "Who by fire, who by flood, who by famine, who by murder" etc etc etc. its like a 30 minute song. anyway thats a yom kippur prayer. then theres another long prayer where you "pound" your chest (hit it with your fist) and confess the sins of your community, i.e. every sin. during that service you stand up pretty much the whole time for like 3 hours.
it sucks.
so we get all the attoning over with in one day, then we drink and make fun of goys for the rest of the year.

thats not true. many religions, including islam, acknowledge that there are many different ways to worship god. in fact, christianity is the only religion i can think of (and islam in practice but not in writing) that is so determined to be right and convert people... and most of the time the religion is not the real cause of violence, but the excuse used. example: using the bible to rationalize slavery. example: african tribes claiming to war over tribal/spritiual differences, but actually wanting to enslave other tribes to sell to the slave trade and gain power/weaponry. and a lot of the perpetual violence, like in israel, is not simply a case of religion but a power struggle for control of a region (therefore economiically motivated).
