I've been on a Gillian Welch kick, that should qualify under singer/songwriter or alt/country.I definitely go through phases; sometimes they don't last very long and sometimes they go on for months. Sometimes they happen at the same time. If you're in singer-songwriter mode, seriously check out Richard Buckner's "Meadow". I think it's his best album in a long, long time.Is it just me, or do you guys go through music phases? Like all summer all I wanted was catchy stuff; either shitty pop music or the Yeah Yeah Yeah Song or Arcade Fire-type fast indie rock. Last month I only wanted the Small Faces and the Kinks. Now I want singer/songwriter-y stuff. And sometimes I'll go a whole week only wanting to hear one song... and not necessarily a catchy one or one that's new to me, but in August I listened to Old Man by Neil Young several times a day. Now it's Suzanne by Leonard Cohen. And at some point it's been almost every Bob Dylan song. Weird...

cooo, I did a thread of this exact same name on the divine comedy board some time ago, what an interesting fact.
Sufjan's Songs For Christmas eps and goodies is available to pre-order from Asthmatic Kitty should you wish. Have ordered me two copies, dirt cheap price of $19 each.
Some 2006 recommendations:
Johann Johannsson, an Icelandic chap with a fondness of lots of strings and an old supercomputer http://www.myspace.com/johannjohannsson
Kinit Her, some strange American band, that sound like spooky little goblins singing, and great music too: http://www.myspace.com/kinither
and Benni Hemm Hemm for more Icelandic'ness, kind of a bit Jens Lekman'y: http://www.myspace.com/bennihemmhemm
I'm currently investigating some Japanese bands/artists that seem interesting (as all I really so far own is Shugo Tokumaru), but am still deciding which ones seem good enough to spend my dosh on.

Hey Paul --
I finally heard a song by Beirut on the radio the other day (Postcards from Italy, I think?) and I thought, "Damn, I should have listened when they were talking about this band months ago!"
- Mere "they didn't sound like what I was expecting when I heard the name 'Beirut'" 1975

Yes. Whatever works at the time, but I like to mix it up. I just bought the Ben Kweller album, which has catchy songs and singer-songwriter stuff. Then I bought Mew's new album. I'm playing catch-up! Secret Machines' newest album's not bad either. Is it just me, or do you guys go through music phases?
