Tonsillitis

Postby Dalya » Mon Dec 15, 2008 3:20 am

And IT'S BACK! Or rather, the doctor doesn't think it ever left. My throat started to hurt again Friday night and by the time I woke up early Saturday morning (6), I couldn't swallow anymore. I called my doctor and the doctor on call said that because I had already taken 2 rounds of amoxycillin (sp?) (or actually I think it's albutrin? amoxycillin mixed with some other kinds of antibiotics) in one month and it still came back, I should go to the hospital.

So i went to the ER at noon on Saturday. They drew blood and did a CT of my throat and found that I had a small abscess. Not big enough to drain, but big enough to be worrisome. Plus I had a medium high fever (101) and couldn't stay awake. So they put me on an IV with fluids, antibiotics, steroids, and morphine. They finally decided they wanted me to stay overnight so they could keep me on an IV and continue pain meds and steroids. The ENT wanted to just see if the antibiotics would work. If it got worse he would have to drain the abscess. If it didn't improve, he'd have to do a tonsillectomy. So they moved me up to a room a little after 7. (Yes, 7 hours on a bed in the ER with fluorescent lights in my face.) My mom stayed with me the whole time (that's love). She brought me soup and pajamas and my cell phone. The ENT put me on no food or liquid after midnight in case they needed to do surgery the next day. Then they switched my pain meds to Lortab and gave me an ambien, which knocked me out.

Woke up feeling much better. The ENT came by at noon and said I was doing much better and that I could eat. I ended up checking out at about 5:30.

Now I am home, showered, fever-free, and feeling much better. That's the first time I ever stayed in a hospital overnight. It was actually kinda nice. They had cable TV and the nurse responded instantly whenever I called. And being on pain-killers made it go by pretty fast.

Hopefully this is the end of the ordeal. I'm checking back in with the ENT in 2 or 3 weeks unless it (god forbid) gets bad again before then.

Morphine, lortab and ambien. . . I bet you slept like a baby!

Glad you're OK now.

Which hospital did you go to?

I would say pretty much anywhere but Medical City.

The first doctor that saw me kept arguing with me that I had either had strep or mono all month, even though I'd been tested for both and they were both negative. He also said there was no way I'd had an abscess in Novemeber because the ONLY way to treat a peritonsillary abscess is to "cut that sucker out". I was like... well, I looked it my mouth and saw it, and my doctor agreed it was an abscess, and so did the PA, so i don't know what to tell you, jackass. Plus, the ENT said I have an abscess now, and he treated it with antibiotics alone... not cutting it out. I love cocky 2nd year residents...

I went to Medical Center of Plano and it was really good. It didn't smell hospital-y, there was no wait in the ER, the nurses were really nice and helpful, and all the doctors except that first douche were smart and had good bedside manner. Baylor of Plano is also good (George Bush and Preston Rd), and also Presby Plano (Parker and the Tollroad). I don't know about Richardson Regional, even though it's the closest.

K, thanks. I would probably head toward Baylor or MC Plano in an emergency. My sister-in-law had all 3 kids at Presbyterian Plano and loved that place.

medical center is the closest and I think also the cheapest of all those hospitals... so in a true emergency, I'd head there. (It's at coit and 15th street, just on the other side of the turnpike)
