No Country for Old Men - soooo good but disturbing. It leaves you feeling really unsettled. If seeing people and animals get killed bothers you, you probably shouldn't see it. But Tommy Lee and Javier Whatever (I forget his last name) are incredible, as is the cinematography. I feel like I need to see it 3 more times to fully absorb it and not focus solely on blood pouring out of wounds.
I'm Not There - 70% good, 30% eh. I feel like the movie doesn't make sense for the most part unless you've read Dylan's biography. All of the parts with Richard Gere and Marcus Carl Franklin (little black kid) don't seem to relate the movie at all unless you know what period it's spposed to represent. It's much more surreal than the rest of the film and just seems sort of odd. Also if you don't know who Billy the Kid is, everything with Richard Gere is meaningless. Everything Cate Blanchett does is wonderful, and you can see a huge similarity between her scenes and Velvet Goldmine, in a good way. Christian Bale and Heath Ledger are also great. And the soundtrack is great. About 50% original Dylan and 50% covers. I'm not sure how I feel about it overall. It definitely kept my interest but some of it just seemed unnecessary or absurd. Example: 5 second Kim Gordon cameo, 11 year old black Dylan getting eaten by a whale, Dylan as Billy the Kid having a female dog named Hnery.
The best scene is with Cate Blanchett reenacting the first time Dylan went electric at a folk festival in the northeast. Hayes uses a device in that scene that I really liked but I don't want to give it away. Anyway has anyone else seen it?
