i need to buy one. i don't want to buy a lot of stereo crap, as I live in apartment (can't listen that loud anyway) and don't want to have to move a lot of equipment every few years. I think I just want one of the portable ones you can plug headphones into, unless someone tells me those are terrible.
hopefully spend less that $100... any suggestions or knowledge to share? i know that I should not get belt-drive, because I don't know how to fix the belts. That's about all I know.

buy yourself an ION turntable...that way you can hook it up to your computer and listen (I think) and also turn your LPs into mp3s for when you're not listening at home. They're not too expenseive either.
I'm gonna get one myself at some point so I can start converting my LPs cuz I never listen to them now. (I do have a turntable, but don't have a stereo right now).

if you get a stand alone player you'll probably need to run it through an amp/tuner. you can plug your ear phones into that, or if you like to let your neighbor still know you live there eve at 4am you'll need to some speakers.
or you can just go to something like this. seems jen has one, not like this, but where it combines everything into one package.

belt-drive turntables are a cinch to keep maintained. The biggest problem with direct drive ones is that they tend to be about $50 more expensive than belt-drive ones.

i actually have a version of this:

which is great for me because i live in a small apartment and have an abundance of cds/cassettes/vinyl that i refuse to get rid of. people look at you funny when you say you want a turntable and cassette deck and cd player but not some huge ass component system, so this was just right. nothing too fancy, but gets the job done cheaply.
