Anyone going to see The Shins on March 5 in Dallas?
This show snuck up on me! I had no idea they were coming to town! I got tickets yesterday though.

We work in very different kinds of places apparently. I am the only one in my office who knows who they are, and I am certainly on the upper end of the age scale. The young'ns round here are all about bringing the sexxy back, and london bridges, etc. Damn kids. There is much Shins buzz at work. Completely unexpected to me. Maybe this will be like Radiohead. A decade of semi-obscurity and overnight they were everywhere.
Speaking of kids, I saw the younger Salvie boy Saturday night and when I mentioned the Shins show he asked me, in all seriousness, if they were playing the American Airlines Center!
I really really want to go, but it's on a school night, and I'm too old to stay out so late. If I decide to do it, can I hang with you cool kids?

I'll be saving my energy for the David Garza show at the Gypsy on the 10th. #1, it's Dah-veed and he will rock your socks off and lovingly knit you a new pair, and #2 it's probably the last gig I'll see at the current incarnation of the Gypsy.

Save room for me and Sam. I'll be singing loudly!I'll be saving my energy for the David Garza show at the Gypsy on the 10th. #1, it's Dah-veed and he will rock your socks off and lovingly knit you a new pair, and #2 it's probably the last gig I'll see at the current incarnation of the Gypsy.
Unless he plays all new stuff. Then I'll be quiet.

After thier set at Lollapalooza, I'm really not intereested. Which is unfortunate, since it really wasn't their fault the sound was fucked up... But I still don't care.
That's the thing...they're either mesmerising or complete shit. When they're on though, it really is the closest thing to a religious experience I've ever had (and it's happened three times with them). The other times, I wanted to run screaming and throwing fireballs at goombas it was so bad. Can't explain it.
I don't know what I don't like the new album yet. But like you, I still don't care. It'll come to me if it does...

Well, I love love love the new Shins album. It's not often that music really excites me, but this one does it for me. It may have something to do with an artist maturing? I've noticed that in recent years, I find this happens with me. Like with Ben Folds - I like his later stuff a whole lot more than BFF stuff, and I'm pretty sure it's because I find BFF somewhat juvenile whereas his solo stuff is more grownup. The same can be said of the Shins - as much as I like the earlier stuff, I REALLY like this one. Maybe it's because Mercer is looking down the barrel of forty, and dealing with grownup things in his life, like marriage and fatherhood. And I think that maturity may be reflected in the music - nothing specific I can put my finger on, just that I find it more relatable, or appealing, or something. Just a theory.

the shins I've liked on record (by that I mean they're ok), but when I've seen them live...meh.
now I happen to love love love SPOON on album and live...I always forget how much I really like this band until I happen to hear their name (saw them this weekend on tv ACL). anway, just wanted to give a shout out for spoon is all.

So do you have the retail version, or the one that someone posted here some time ago?Well, I love love love the new Shins album. I don't know if they're different, but I know often they are (the leaked versions v. the official release). I got a leaked copy of the Fiona Apple album and thought it was so-so but I hear the official release was better. I keep feeling liek the new album is just missing something... maybe it's because I'm not hearing the same album you're hearing.

I have the official release - bought it the day it came out.
I think you're right, sometimes what leaks isn't the final version. I don't know if that's the case here, but as I recall, the leak was like 3 or 4 months before the release date, and I'm assuming a lot can happen in that amount of time.
Like I know so much.

My fourth Wincing episode has convinced me. The first two were very 'meh' but I have now come around. We will be making up for some concert going slackitude in the last few months with tickets to all of the above mentioned shows. I am psyched about Ted Leo. The single from their soon-to-be released album on myspace sounds pretty damned good.
