yes, super hype about the new Decemberists album has been batting around the internets for a while now. I believe it leaked about 6 weeks or so ago, but I haven't downloaded it in full as Joanna is tiding me over until it gets released.
And that happens for you USers next tuesday (3rd), and for us in Blighty the monday after (9th) on Capitol.

I've had a sneaky peeky from the usual sources, and a KCRW session on monday. Some of the songs seem a little bit standard fare, but I shall give them a bit more attention. Seem to lack the narrative interest that the first three albums have. The big long epics are amazing though; The Crane Wife 1 and 2 in particular (it features my favourite chord progression). For me, the jury is still out as to whether they should have stayed on KRS, but that subject has been breached in a billion different contexts before.

give it a gooooooo [if you don't hate colin meloy's voice].

oh gosh, its fantastic. i think they really made the most of their new Capitol-provided resources.

hilight is track 2, "the island/come and see/the landlord's daughter...": twelve and a half minutes of prog-y audial assault, and "crane wife 1&2" along with closer "sons and daughters" makes for a classic ending. i don't know if i like it better than picaresque (less pop sensibility or something), but they've found a good balance bt lyrics and music for once..
