True art knows no time.heh..
it's...
dull.
i mean, and i really hate saying that, because the music is good! but, seriously, people:
Ys's times:
12:07
09:29
09:54
16:53
07:15
now that looks scary. and there's at least five good songs that could have been in between there....
i'm the law of the land, i got ga-ga-ga-ga-guh-guh-girls on the command
What does time have to do with anything? You said the music is good; shouldn't that suffice? Who cares none of it is 3:30; do you think she was after a big radio hit? Probably not.heh..

But then, I have the tolerance for long songs...I listen to "Supper's Ready" by Genesis in full quite a bit...

it's dull but you haven't heard it yet?heh..

i have a patience for long songs, too. however, on Ys, the ideas just meander. seriously, seriously meander. it'd be great if she was doing all sorts of different things within the music, but she's not doing that.
instead, a song that would have been wonderful had it been edited at five minutes is annoying at seven minutes, and ultimately irritatingly dull at nine minutes. i think she should have been *edited* and had some restraint in the creative process.
(i have a prerelease advance, btw)

I don't find the long tracks to be bothersome at all. If anything, having only five tracks makes the album seem more cohesive. Let me expand on that.
If you have an album with 12 seperate tracks, there is going to be more room in between the songs creatively, as not every song can sound the same (unless you're Sufjan). So you have 12 tracks with serpate identites that all lend something special to the album but also pull at any central theme the album may be going for.
Now, if you only have five tracks, theoretically there would not be as many chefs in the kitchen so to speak, and the album would seem more focused.
Maybe it has something to do with the theory above or maybe it's just Newsom's incredible ability to weave an album like a professional storyteller spins a yarn, but I think the album is incredible with it's highs and lows and sidewayses in the right places.
