Sweeney Todd

Music, movies, entertainment, etc. Because James wanted it (and seems like a pretty good idea)

See: Chicago, Hedwig, and Dreamgirls
but a big part of the reason these were successful was because the music could appeal to a broad audience. chicago is jazzy and catchy, hedwig is rock 'n roll badassness, and dreamgirls is that soul/r& b thing. i don't really think sondheim is listenable music for the general masses. it's patter and tough rhythms and certainly very technically difficult. but i don't think sondheim is particularly good music to just sit and listen to - not for most people, anyways.

i like what you have to say about them making movie musicals for people who don't like musicals. i don't really get why most people don't love theater anymore. i think it's nice to give these general masses some exposure to the art form, but it can't be expected to be the same thing because film and theater are two completely different animals. as are their audiences. i don't know how to find that perfect amalgamation in general, let alone when you throw a director with a very focused vision onto a work many people already know and love created by another man with a very focused vision.

know what you mean. it could've been great. it was good, and i bet to sondheim fans, that's pretty disappointing, where to someone ignorant to sweeney would be pleasantly surprised.
