In Rainbows

Music, movies, entertainment, etc. Because James wanted it (and seems like a pretty good idea)

This may be just me, but we'll see if any of you guys smell what I'm cookin; can pick up what I'm throwing down, but I feel like to say Radiohead is a rip off of Pink Floyd is like saying Fight Club is a rip off of The Graduate. They spoke to completely different generations who had very different reasons for coming to largely the same conclusions, and they don't even sound that similar.

Oh, I realize that it's a very lazy, and often made comparison, and I don't think so much that they're a "rip off", more like descendents.

But I swear, the very first time I ever heard them, years ago, when my son put on a CD and said MOM YOU'VE GOT TO HEAR THIS in that very excited-oh-my-god-look-what-I've-discovered kind of way, the first words out of my mouth were "you really should listen to Pink Floyd". At the time I'd never heard of Radiohead and knew nothing about them, but my immediate reaction was...Pink Floyd reheated. So, I think it is a valid comparison to make - not necessarily a negative.

That being said, I think what they're doing with this new album is just all kinds of cool. I'm not a big fan, probably won't listen to it, but I love the fact that they're doing it.

p.s Oh, yeah, and BTW, my son took my advice and listened to Pink Floyd, and nowadays he's a big fan...of both bands. And so it goes.
Are you on the list?

Word. I'm a huge fan of both bands, also, and I can see that there are similarities. I also think Radiohead does something that no one else has done, and that Pink Floyd never could have done if only because it's basis is more contemporary. The 90's, I mean... fkuck.

I keep imagining the guys from Harvey Danger at a party going, "No really!! We totally did it like two years before Radiohead did, I swear!"

And everybody at the party's all, "Whatevs, Harv."

I haven't heard the new album yet but personally I still prefer OK Computer to Hail to the Thief, even though I get why Hail is a "more important" album. Call me old fashioned, I like music that's more about instruments than computers. And actually, having said that I realze it sounds dumb because a lot of stuff on OK Computer is electronic... aaaand I've lost interest in trying to explain.

EDIT: Actually, ignore all that. What I meant to say is: "Hail to the Thief and Kid A are too electronic-ey for me. If the new one is the same I'll be a little sad."

Another edit: Best Week Ever blog did something funny on this

You won't be a little sad then. I was just noticing today that the vast majority of it is real instruments. And it's also the most straightforward album they've done in a while. Oh yeah, and it's not miserable...

Certainly the best record they've made since OK Computer, in terms of a record that is an entire consistent entity.

I love the dreamlike quality of the record, it is quite beautiful. Standout song at the moment for me is House of Cards.

I've not listened to it as much as I want, but PJ Harvey's new record has a monopoly on my CD player at the moment.

I got my box set yesterday, and I'm floored at how wonderful it looks. A wonderful book of artwork, lovely heavy grade vinyl (at 45 speed no less), the second disc...I'll try and get some pics up but it's just stunning...

I remember asking a guy I went to school with what he thought about Radiohead just after OK Computer came out. He said they were "pretty good for a guitar band." I still don't have a response for that one.

The Return Of Radiohead

Wow...I had lost this after the download from the Radiohead site. Never really got it to work. Went ahead and bought it off of itunes about a week ago. I have been listening to it nonstop. I thought they had lost it...but this is a great record.
I like connecting things.

I looooooove this album!

I got it the day they released it online....albeit after a million frustrating attempts!

But when that baby finished downloading that night! MY GOODNESS!

I've been a huge fan of Radiohead sometime after OK Computer, still my favorite of the group.

At first, I didn't care too much for Kid A and Amnesiac, but over time they warmed up to me although I still see most of the music on those albums as cold and sterile.

HTTT and Rainbows are much more accessible and melodic. I can sit back and get lost in the music, it is a perfect album to fly to!

I was tempted to get the late train home tonight so that I could see this... although I seriously doubt anyone not waiting since early this morning would have got in. The new Rough Trade shop is big, but not that big.
I wonder how chaotic Brick Lane was tonight.

they moved it to a venue nearby because the police had concerns about having it at rough trade.

And they didn't use screens and speakers outside like originally planned.
