haven't heard of this book over this side of the pond before but it seems that the oprah seal of approval has made it a multi seller stateside.

I guess that James Frey thought that he wouldn't be labeled as a Chuck Palahniuk ripoff if he claimed his stuff was real.

The article says he tried submitting it as fiction first, was rejected numerous times, then re-wrote it without the made up parts (he tells the publisher) and managed to get it published. I would imagine from the excerpts that it is pretty mediocre as fiction.
I think his real goal was to woo the richest bachelorette in the world, the Big O. He almost did it. Now her wrath will probably put him back in the places he never was.
