someone showed this commerical to me today and it's basically confounded me. i'll hold my hand up there and say i'm pretty into korean stuff, but only because of personal history. whenever someone is like 'i looooove japan,' though, it seems kind of weird, arbitrary, contrived and orientalist. i don't actually know what orientalist but for the purposes of this post it will mean 'weird fetishization of asian shit.'

i mean, you never see teenage kids going 'i love brazil! let's eat some rice and beans and listen to antonio carlos jobim.' but all of those things are awesome! brazil is a great country! the women there are beautiful. if anything, it should be more popular than japan! ditto cameroon, thailand, etc.

whenever i try to voice my concerns about this kind of thing, people like to target me as being racist. i'm not, i'm really not! i'm not saying you have to like white people stuff if you're white or anything like that. all i'm saying is that there's a point where you start to look like this, but in an insane and ugly way.



in conclusion, i think it's motivated entirely by orientalist sexual fantasy. ladies, next time a fella asks you if you want sushi, he actually means he wants to splatter his goo on a japanese schoolgirl's face. sorry!!
