Interview with the guy who makes most of the fried chicken signs in the uk, to co-incide with a new book
Graphic designer Siâron Hughes was first drawn to the visual world of fried chicken after a flier was pushed through her door bearing the enticing words “Dunk Your Dipper”. Intrigued, she started documenting and talking to the owners of fried chicken shops all over London and, eventually, in the US.

“At first sight, much of this signage appears the same, but there are differences, subtle as they may be,” she says. This is the real appeal of chicken shop signage.”

What makes her book stand out from other “vernacular type” showcases is her evident interest in the people who run the shops and those involved in producing the graphics for menus, signs and so on. The book is packed with interviews and photographs from the shops, some of which are amusing, others quite touching in their revelation of the sometimes dangerous profession of being a purveyor of fried poultry to the (often drunk) masses.

If Dallas were to be known for its BBQ, it wouldn't be because it's good.

interesting. Ive seen many of those chicken places and haven't eaten in any of them. Figured, they wouldn't be that good. I just stick to eating things I know I can't get back home.

actually, some of the best chicken and pizza I've ever had I've had in the DFW area. For chicken, Henderson Chicken (right near the house) is freakin' amazing, and Cliff's Star Neighborhood Grill in Grapevine (right near the office) has some of the best pizza I've ever had.

We wandered by a Dallas chicken in kingston-upon-thames and it looked like standard kfc fare - we were heading to an american diner that sold rootbeer so didn't stop in - amy was on a mission :) haven't seen a Dallas pizza, will have to investigate!

My favourite example is in portsmouth, just down from the wedgewood rooms where you find KFC - Ken's Fried Chicken

I meant, I wouldn't order fried chicken in the UK, just like I won't eat mexican there (well actually I have, but it's not that great). I stick to what they know best pasties, pies, crisps, etc. :D

Ahhhh, yes, The Colonel!
Stuart Mackenzie: Well, it's a well known fact, Sonny Jim, that there's a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world, known as The Pentavirate, who run everything in the world, including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado, known as The Meadows.

Tony Giardino: So who's in this Pentavirate?

Stuart Mackenzie: The Queen, The Vatican, The Gettys, The Rothschilds, *and* Colonel Sanders before he went tits up. Oh, I hated the Colonel with is wee *beady* eyes, and that smug look on his face. "Oh, you're gonna buy my chicken! Ohhhhh!"

Charlie Mackenzie: Dad, how can you hate "The Colonel?"

Stuart Mackenzie: Because he puts an addictive chemical in his chicken that makes ya crave it fortnightly, smartass!

Ahhhh, yes, The Colonel!
That photo was taken at the Original KFC -- this was last August while we were driving from North Carolina to Illinois. We stopped there for lunch. Some lady asked us if we wanted her to take a picture of us... then afterwards said something like... "I'm very fond of Harland." *creeeepy* Haha.

I've only been to one once... Called Chick-O-Land!! It was after a night out drinking in town.
I guess people eat there all the time, but I think they are more popular for the drunken masses.

My research has told me as much. Apparently you Brits like to nosh your chicken after a night of imbibing.
