Save hand-made toys (Viva la etsy!)

Handmade Toy Alliance

The U.S. passed a law last year to protect kids (and adults) from things like lead in paint on toys.

However, it would also require small businesses to spend hundreds or thousands on third-party testing on toys and handmade goods to comply with the law -- and likely force them out of business.
- A toymaker, for example, who makes wooden cars in his garage in Maine to supplement his income cannot afford the $300 - $4,000 fee per toy that testing labs are charging to assure compliance with the CPSIA.
- A work at home mom in Minnesota who makes cloth diapers to sell online must choose either to violate the law or cease operations.
- A small toy retailer in Vermont who imports wooden toys from Europe, which has long had stringent toy safety standards, must now pay for testing on every toy they import.
- And even the handful of larger toy makers who still employ workers in the United States face increased costs to comply with the CPSIA, even though American-made toys had nothing to do with the toy safety problems of 2007.
I am going to use this sample letter!

yeah, one of my blog/other forum buddies is David Horvath (he created and makes Ugly Dolls, now in the news thanks to one of the mini-Obamas). He's been complaining about the the new regs for a while. What it's driven him and his wife to do is not put out but a handful of handmade Uglies due to the testing required. When they are put out now, they are classified as "artwork" rather than plush toys (at the price they sell for, I ain't lettin' no damn kid drool on 'em), but the hassle is still there.

that super sucks, because of CHINA we're going to have whole mom and pop American made (and most likely SAFE) products/toys go away. CHINA SUCKS! Their disregard for human welfare is like a bad disease that's killing us all.

oh yeah, I signed the petition and tonight will send some sample letters to my people!

Will you hand-deliver them while in D.C.?
