Just in case anyone gets the same problem I did today - if you find that you can't access the internet and you're running XP and Zonealarm, one of this week's Microsoft security updates conflicts with Zonealarm and screws up the internet so you can't access it. luckily it wasn't updated on the laptop / wii so i could find this webpage with a bit of info:

yeah, I seriously considered it with my recent purchase...but the cost still keeps me from getting a mac. I can get more bang for my buck with a pc, sad but true.

For personal use they really don't accomplish what most people think they should. For effectiveness you really need the protection before you actually get to your client machine. At our house we have a router that is immediately downstream from our modem. On this router I have the protective measures needed to prevent intrusion into our little "sandbox." Client-side firewalls such as the one built into XP & Vista or even Zonealarm are very popular, but really cause more problems for your home network than would a physical firewall device.
