We have friends who lived in the Winnetka Heights area on Jefferson for 6-7 years (only moved to PA because he works for the Phillies now) and they loved it. LOVED it. Loved their neighbors, loved restoring their old house, etc.

However, her Honda Civic was stolen from their driveway twice, and she said there are always stray animals wandering around. She said people just let them run loose or leave them -- and with many of them not being spayed or neutered it creates a big problem. (So she used to capture cats to bring to a local vet, who would spay and release them again!)

We looked at moving there last year, but I was just not ready to walk to dog after dark on most streets. By the time it would be "nice" enough to feel good, I am sure we wouldn't be able to afford it.

Still, it kills me to see how great the old houses are for the money -- they have beautiful mid-century neighborhoods as well as the tudor style.

Dooo it. I'd love to live out there. We were looking in that area for houses before we decided to pay student loans (booo!). If you get an older house (and why wouldn't you, they have so much character) though, don't max out your budget on the mortgage because you'll prolly want to do some work like new doors and windows - the energy costs will kill on on drafty old houses.

My mom and dad, however, were extremely non-plussed about my choice of theoretical neighborhoods.

Good input. We are looking at a house one street off of winnetka...This street is about 50% gentrified. We're closing to going for it. The property crime etc...is a bit daunting...but I think we can handle it. I'm also thinking for a five year investment...it's a pretty good idea. It's all about getting to Colorado in 5-7. We went driving around at sunset last night to get a feel for things at night. It was a bit freaky. But, we have lived downtown in a loft off of live oak...survived (last night) living off of Greenville on St. Patty's. Is it going to be that much worse? I just want to be comfortable with Glynnis walking the dog by herself in the morning.

I should add it's a 1927 Tudor with original stained glass.

But it smells like an old lady.

It could smell good in no time -- don't worry about that part!

If you go for it, I just recommend getting an inspector who knows older homes and can look for anything questionable. They'll probably find a lot, but a good inspector can tell you what to be worried about and what you can fix on weekends, or down the road.

By the way, I think my friends sold their house for about $70-80K more than they bought it for.

Made an offer. We'll see.

....going to buy a shotgun (against my better judgement).

How exciting, good luck!!!

*jealous*

p.s. you're gonna get a security system too, right? Not sayin you shouldn't have a shotgun if it helps you feel safe, but an alarm is probably way more effective and less prone to life-altering error.

only half serious about the shotgun. I never imagined really owning a gun and when I was looking at them online earlier I felt nervous. Pictures coming soon...still worried about jinxing it.
