NME
The Government may change the law to make burning CDs at home – which breaches copyright rules – no longer a criminal offence.
Although it is a widespread practice among music fans, it is currently illegal to make a copy of a copyrighted CD.
It is technically illegal to transfer files from a CD to MP3 players such as iPods, too.
New government proposals suggest that music fans should be able to make copies for personal use, but giving away or selling copies would still be against the law, as would uploading music onto the internet, BBC News reports.
The British Phonographic Industry has supported the move, but has warned against making changes that could damage the rights of record companies.
The proposals are up for public consultation until April 8.

Cut to 1988, where 13-year-old Meredith runs across room to press 'Play' and 'Record,' never quite catching the beginning of any good song on the radio.

why even bother making any kind of law regarding burned CDs/putting mp3s on mp3 players? no one obeys it or even cares.

Wasn't there the same type of hubub in the 70s (80s?) when personal tape recorders came out as there is today about digital music?

Yep.
And I recall taping of the radio being a big no-no. It was kind of a hybrid of two issues we have today with copying (CD & MP3) and a loss of advertising dollars (Tivo and DVR).

Yep, hence this gem of an ad campaign from the 70's & 80's

One thing sticks out in this. The small font stating that it's illegal. Almost like it was just an afterthought.
It was about the music, maaaan. They were killing the music.
The advertisements today are the opposite.
IT'S ILLEGAL
and it's killing music

My pleasure.

i used to hold my tape recorder up to the radio to record stuff - bootlegging at an early age. usually the top 40 - think i've got a tape somewhere of a 70's tune obliterated by a scraping fork and knife on my plate as i ate some baked beans on toast. you don't get that with yer mp3's sonny.
