It wasn't really a mistake -- I was calling about a car accident I saw, but hung up because I saw a cop car right away.

They called me right back.

"DID YOU DIAL 911? WHAT IS YOUR EMERGENCY? ARE YOU IN DANGER?"

i wonder what would happen if you dialed 911 in the UK?

or 999 in the US of A?

well nothing much if you dial 911. but we have a choice of numbers apparently. the 112 works on mobiles, handy to know.

101 is now used as a non-emergency number for police and local authorities in several areas in England and Wales, and will be extended to cover all of England and Wales by 2008. However, some other numbers are sometimes classed as "emergency": 0800 111 999 for gas leaks, 08 45 46 47 for NHS Direct etc.

here in SF 311 is the local city info line not the cops etc. if you come to SF and need SF info call it and they'll answer your question. it's pretty cool actually. I use to report trash thrown on the sidewalk (big trash) so the city will come and clean it up.

I think it's 811 for non-emergencies.

We have to dial 9 to call out at work and my first week there I accidentally dialed 911. I stayed on the line to say "Oops. Sowwy."

Then our building security called me to find out why I just dialed 911.
