Gen. Musharraf and Chief Justice Chaudhry

Postby Dutch » Wed Nov 07, 2007 2:59 pm

Is anyone else scared to high holy shitfire over what is going on with these guys in nuclear-armed Pakistan?

The military president has suspended the constitution, "relieved" the supreme court, and basically declared martial law to stay in power amidst accusations of improper elections... IN PAKISTAN. I believe I heard he also shut down all public media and has confined the ousted Justices to their homes.

Totally freaked out.

It freaks me out that this was the same person that was yukking it up with Jon Stewart just over a year ago.

What the hell happened in the time since his book tour?

I'm not worried, not in the short term anyway. They'll work it out.

I'm a bit freaked out about it, not only because of the strategic position and nuclear capabilities, but because of how easy a constitutional government can descend into this. It's not the first time in history it's happened, and the outcome has rarely, if ever, been a good thing.

What's also scary is that this is the guy that Bush often pointed to in the Middle East as a model country. Makes me cringe now whenever I see that clip about "Freedom's on the march". Obviously not.

"You can't be the president and the head of the military at the same time," Bush said, describing a telephone call with Gen. Pervez Musharraf. "I had a very frank discussion with him."

i wonder if he frankly discussed the fact that under our constitution, Bush's pretty much only clearly-delineated power is...um...being the head of the military.

are we next?

Nah. The second picture is taken as he was inhaling. The first picture is when he let loose with a sonic scream.

But for reals. This ain't no time for jokes.
