tattoo talk
i've been wanting a tattoo for a while (much to mother's dismay).
i'm really scared it's going to hurt really bad. shockingly enough, i have a low tolerance for pain. i've heard everything to "it didn't hurt at all! it just tickled a little" to "oh man it hurt days afterward it's so bad."
also can't decide what i want.
so basically i have decided nothing.
soooooo
advice?

i'm actually less scared of a tattoo than a piercing. stupid, i know.Get pierced instead, it's not as permanent.
...Or get my face tattooed on your face. That would be pretty awesome.
Also: no lower back or ankle tattoos, or I won't love you anymore.
but omg you have to get my face on yours and then we will match BFF!!!1
yeah: lower back and ankle tattoos are cliche. not my thang. plus i would never jeopardize your love for me.

We'll talk when you are 18. I believe squeezle and I are quite qualified (and know a crapload of extraordinary TX artists). I did not get my first tattoo until I was 23.i'm actually less scared of a tattoo than a piercing. stupid, i know.Get pierced instead, it's not as permanent.

Depositum Custody | not with that faceI got my first tat when I was 18 (bday pressie to myself). I still have it...it's basically crap. I didn't know any better. I designed it myself.
Thank goodness it's tiny
Be certain of what you want because you will probably live with it until you die.
Pick something that means something to you. My next tat will Elvis in nature.
Make sure you'll be happy with the placement on the body. Believe it or not, it can make a difference. When I got mine, women (even in SF) weren't covered in tats like today and it wasn't 'OK' to be so, especially in the office places I worked. That's not true today, but still a little modesty isn't such a bad thing.
Finally, after you've considered all of the above...consider them all again.
and fuck, you're gonna be 18 already?!

Elvis in nature.

out there where the air is clean
the red woods high, and the grass is green
people tell me they have seen
a giant footprint
is he fishing and skiing and hunting duck
with a guitar, shotgun, and a pick-up truck?
well, with any kind of luck
we'll photograph him
oh, oh, come again outdoor elvis
be our friend, save us outdoor elvis
the world has hope 'cause he's feelin' good
escaped the city, lives in the woods
this is the spot i think he stood
here's a giant footprint
a plaster cast where the pilgrims flock
and a ticket lines around the block
if we don't have the king what have we got?
life don't make no sense
oh, oh, come again outdoor elvis
be our friend, save us outdoor elvis
we have sinned, forgive us outdoor elvis
we'll build a shrine among the pines to you
we might have to set a trap to bring him back
dead or alive, if we want to survive
we gotta' bring him back (bring him back)
oh, oh, oh, oh
in his fishin' vest and his silver cape
i'll bet he's really looking great
you can pretty much tell that he's lost weight
from the depth of his footprint
it's said he croons when the moon's above
singing tenderly, "hunk a burnin' love"
it's nice to know he's still got his stuff hasn't
lost the accent
oh, oh, come again outdoor elvis
be our friend, save us outdoor elvis
we have sinned, forgive us outdoor elvis
we'll build a shrine among the pines to you
('till the end of time we'll stand in this line for you)
o.e. o.e. we look for a sign from you
we might have to set a trap
dead or alive, we'll bring him back

When I was 18, I wanted a small sun tattoo. I wanted it for 3 years. Then I wanted a small star tattoo. I wanted it for 5 years. So I got it when I was 26. Six years later, I am still happy with my choice.
I agree with everyone else to take your time and be sure of what you want.
Just because you CAN get a tattoo when you turn 18 doesn't mean you should. Same with joining the army and smoking cigarettes.
(But you should vote.)

these folks are very right. don't get a tattoo just for the sake of having one, because you'll probably regret it later. make sure it's something you can live with having inked on your skin for the rest of your life, and not something that in 20 years, you're going to look at and go, "jesus, what a stupid kid i was."
so decide what you want and go from there. it's not a crime to let it sit in your craw for a few weeks/months/years, either.
