OK, so recently someone complained to me that there aren't any "hard" topic areas here on Forkers Central. I think the main reason for that is the fact that there is too much "hardness" in the world as is; shouldn't the web-o-net be somewhere that doesn't have to be?

Fuck it. I'll go for the hard stuff.


This past week I was surprised to learn that in this era of an "all volunteer US military" (snicker snicker snicker), over 8000 soldiers have deserted during Gulf War 2. What's up with that? They volunteered to do their service, and now they are ducking out just because things are pretty damn hairy?!?!?!?! C'mon folks! If you sign up in wartime, expect to see a little action. If you don't want to see any action, don't sign up!

That's what people get for falling for the recruiters. Idiots. Of course you're going to fight a war.

Needless to say, in case that army ever becomes anything but volunteer, my path to neutrality is paved.

The first draft age limit, yes. But as these things go, they can keep raising it if it gets a little thin. Needless to say, I already have all of my money out of the US and into a "safe haven"

I hope they don't draft me, though. They should have figured out what a bad idea that'd be when I told them where to shove their nuclear reactor after they called me every day for two years trying to talk me into becoming a nuclear engineer. Fucking persistent, they were.

I know where you are coming from Mr. Musick. When I was a senior in highschool the Navy recruited the shit out of me. The really fantastic thing was that, in an attempt to make them leave me alone, I went down to their recruiting office to take their "tests."

To prepare I didn't bathe for 3 days (not a stretch for me ), slung my then shoulder-length hair back in a greasy ponytail, and got good and hungover. I could really tell the recruiter was uncomfortable with me being there. Before you take their written "exercise," they estimate where you'll score and then what area of specialization you'll be able to do with that score. The guy estimated that I would make around a 72 (out of 100), and that I'd probably work out well as a logistics tech.

I took the test, nailed a 98, and then told the recruiter to leave me the fuck alone. The guy tried to change my mind for about 3 minutes and then I didn't heard from the Navy again until after I'd moved out of the house and over to TX. Such fun.

We talk about hard subjects. I complain about Spanish ALL THE TIME.

If you sign up in wartime, expect to see a little action. If you don't want to see any action, don't sign up!

...or in peacetime. I have very little patience for reservists bitching that they "only signed up for two weeks a year." I can sympathize with people whose tours keep getting extended endlessly, or the guys who aren't being allowed to retire. But people who signed up for reserve duty because they thought they'd be getting something for nothing don't need to complain that they got called up.

this is why I don't buy too much into the cindy sheehan sob stories where parents protest that their sons/daughters were killed in Iraq because the war is illegal/immoral/blah blah blah...yes we know that already...thats why smart people with an inkling of historical knowledge about why we go to war don't volunteer...did anyone see on the daily show a while back, Cindy Sheehan meeting with the hugo chavez and praising him yet citizens of venezuela go to prison for up to 4 years for just opposing chavez...smart choice cindy...anyway, ramble ramble ramble...here's a short 4 minute soundbyte of Justin's favourite standup comedian doug stanhope talking about volunteering...t'is funny

he only did 1 video for a goof and never got paid for it...he even outed joe francis about not being paid live on howard stern which was funny...and he's since left LA and moved to a cool little artist town in arizona because he doesn't give a fuck about ambition and a career...he's basically my hero and I want his babies just so we can abort them together

It was probably the ASVAB Test... The whole reason I had to deal with their persistent recruiting efforts was because, for some reason, my entire class had to take it as a mandatory exam one year... some sort of evaluation or something. I scored a 98 on it as well, by far the highest grade in my class, and it was not long after I got the results for it that the calls came pouring in. They'd obviously released the results to recruiters, which royally pissed a LOT of us off.

On a similar note, I LOVED the fact that any time we had a standardized test or major exam, I always whipped major ass on it despite doing no research or homework, EVER. It was great to see the "Top Ten" crowd nearly shit themselves when I outscored them on a test that they had spent months preparing for and I'd literally just walk in, finish the test in no time and paint the wall with their asses. I could even write a book report that had very little to do with the book itself and still manage an 'A'.

God, I'm glad I'm done with that shit.

That is, until all the younguns are killed off fighting Eurasia and Oceania.

The WWI draft covered ages 18-45, so we could all get our chance yet.

It should be obvious to any potential recruit, by now anyway, that all those hi-tech, prepare-you-for-the-business-world assignments are being performed by contractors who will make two or three times your pay. If you don't want to put your life on the line to execute the President's foreign policy and still sign up, you really only have yourself to blame.
