most raccoons die if you release them to the wild after you raise them because they don't have survival skills.

*read that on the net when i was considering a pet raccoon last night*
We didn't raise Rocky, he was a few months old and stealing cat food off someone's porch when we got him. He was only with us a few months (weeks?).

sorry i didnt mean to imply he died. i was just thinking about adopting a raccoon but if i couldnt take care of it for some reason, there's nothing I could do with it. I doubt its very easy to get someone else to adopt it and you can't release it. It's like a dog that will die if you abandon it. poor little guys.

I've decided that Mr. Bojangles probably didn't have Distemper after all. I think he was one of those punk rock racoons and he was just bleary-eyed and stumbling because he was drunk. I mean, it was noon, right? And what could be more punk rock than that? After they took him away he prolly just slept it off.

Dalya, have you ever read Rascal? (A young adult book about a pet raccoon, based on a true story.) It was one of my favorite books.

no, but now i want to. who's it by?

the Finnish word for racoon literally means "wash bear" because they dip all their food in water before they eat it, and people used to think they were hygeinic and had to wash their food, but it's for some other reason. So anyway, whenever i get another dog it's going to be named washbear.

Hey, we are making artist trading cards for a class, and instead of focusing on paintings, sculptures, etc. I am making a series of Scandinavian furniture designer cards. I should ask your parents for help.

Thanks! I just need to do 6 cards though and I am doing famous designs, like a card for the Barcelona chair by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (probably spelled that wrong.)

I might have to stop by Design within Reach, though. Twist my arm.

Tonight I was watching Wife Swap (and I should have known better), and this woman from Kentuky was sent to live with a religious Jewish family and she said:

"I don't want to eat kosher. I mean, that's just not the American way of life."

And then the Kentucy family took the Jewish mom coon hunting. And I thought of you. And I turned my TV off.

It's by Sterling North. Check out your young adult section.. :)

According to wikipedia "it was made into a 52-episode Japanese anime entitled Araiguma Rasukaru." Now I gotta see that!
