Lawyer states "Ripping CD's for personal use is illegal and is a copyright violation"

i've always kinda-sorta been on the industry's side of things, but have started to have a change of heart. reading this story makes me want to say "go, pirates, go!"

If I ever get audited/investigated/whatevered... I'm screwed.

How do these companies decide who they are going to go after?

If you're married to a foreigner, you're target #1.

they're just a bunch of hypocrites - they've said in previous cases that you can do that. why don't they just sue apple, sony etc for having devices / software that allows you to rip cd's.... oh no, i forgot, those companies have expensive lawyers who might win the case.

wish they would spend their time thinking of a sustainable business model going forward rather than paying lawyers top dollar to try and re-enact king canute.

haaaa. You should not own a computer.

The headline of the article is misleading though. The quote from the brief says "Once Defendant converted Plaintiffs' recording into the compressed .mp3 format and they are in his shared folder, they are no longer the authorized copies distributed by Plaintiffs." They're not suing him for ripping for persnal use.

So, even though the lawers may say they reserve the right to sue people for ripping music for personal use, it doesn't mean they're going to sue people for it. Laywers have to reserve the right to sue people for ANYTHING, they're lawyers. They can't say "oh, that's ok then," because they might have to reserve that statement later.

So yeah, RIAA may be bastards and all, but I think you can make that point without making them responsioble for somtheing they didn't actually do.
