So I'm making a silent movie for a competition and I was watching what I had edited so far at school when these two girls came up behind me and told me how very indie it was.
"No, that's a good thing, I love indie movies!"
The thing is, I have no idea what 'indie' is supposed to mean. Anybody?
Oh, Chris, you're so indie

"Indie" is both easy and hard to define in terms of film.
Easy: If the picture is released by a non-major company (An independant company), then it is technically an indie film and will only show in so-called "Art houses" and smaller theatres. Often times, these films are "cool" flicks that are really good but won't make a shit-ton of money...hence the "pass" from the big fellas.
Hard: There's no specific style of indie movie. Some people know it when they see it. Generally, I'd say, the movie would need to have a cool or hipster tone about it. Even so, the term applies much more to the company attached to a movie rather than anything in the movie itself.
But they were teenage girls. Most likely, they meant to say, "Your film is cool" and/or "I want you inside me."

Yeah, I know the 'easy' definition of indie but I thought they were referring to the style. Hmmm.
I happen to think my film is pretty cool but I doubt they want me in them.
Also, I feel really bad referring to it as a film when I'm shooting and editing it digitally for some reason.
