According to my friend from Argentina, they are still angry about the Falkland Islands, too. (She said she grew up singing songs about England taking their islands, and kids there today still do, too!)still angry about that 22 years on....
I'm sure that political rivalry had a huge impact on this match.

absolutely - the junta used the falklands as propaganda to try and boost their popularity and didn't expect us to use military force to retake the islands after their invasion. i heard a few stories from someone who was on the Ardent when she was sunk and was later involved in some of the fighting on the island - he couldn't work what the appeal of the islands was other than national pride.
at the time the jingoistic Sun newspaper stirred things up with their anti-Argentinian headlines and a lot of that carried on in 86 (and got repeated in 98 and 02 when we played Argentina again in the World Cup). If we'd lost by a goal scored fairly it wouldn't have mattered after the next day - but the way we lost that day still rankles.
