Midlake vs Pitchfork?

Music, movies, entertainment, etc. Because James wanted it (and seems like a pretty good idea)

I saw that last night. PASTE gave it a 91. And I'm not really one to depend on what "critics" say. This will be a polarizing album.

I had it in yesterday morning on the way to work and found myself ejecting it halfway into the thrid song. I didn't dislike it. I just wasn't in the mood for it.
Come Saturday morning, when it's cold and the house is asleep, I have coffee percing and the place to myself... I bet I'll be in the mood for it then.

I will never understand why anyone will take Pitchfork's word on anything.

I take that back.

I will never understand why anyone will take ANYONE's word on anything.

Because that's how lost classics happen. It's lazy. Yes, there are certain people that even I will look to favourably by their review, but it's not gold dust.

I'm sure the albums great, because they are. And if it's not, well, that's for individuals to decide.

my thing: i agree with jimbo. it's a good record, but Trials of Van Occupanther, it ain't. And there's no BoC-like "Roscoe" on there, either. It would have been easy for Midlake to have made "Roscoe, pt. 2," but how utterly boring would that have been?

It is indeed a risky proposition to make a record that's not true to form but god bless 'em, they did exactly what they wanted to do, and I think people will love it. And yeah, it's one of those, coffee-in-the-morning, holding sleepy toddler, mellow record sort of experiences. i wish it rocked a little more, but i'm happy with it nonetheless.

I'm listening to it now on Spotify at work, doing some programming and drinking coffee.

Four tracks in and I love it, but then I love acoustic folky minor-key subdued stuff like Tunng and Fairport Convention, which were the first two things that popped into my head. There's a bit of Jethro Tull in there too.

I agree it will probably be polarising, but all that matters to me is me in this instance. There's another set of fans that will really dig it hopefully.

I finally warmed up to it. Had the perfect moment and it sank in.

Sounds like a coming of age tale.
