there's a special exhibit of his sculptures at MOMA right now and I love them. most of his sculptures are just these sheets of iron that are turned at really subtle angles to make maze-like and cave-like structures that you can walk through.




on the moma website there are virtual tours and videos of how they installed the sculptures. its really cool.

I've always liked My Curves Are Not Mad at the DMA/Nasher. Torqued Ellipse IV is bad ass. I'd love to see it in person. The smaller ones don't have the same effect, maybe Delineator.

the big ones are definitely better. there were some of his smaller pieces too but I didn't like them nearly as much. the ones in the courtyard were really cool also because you can look up at them against the sky and aginst other buildings instead of just white walls. My favorite was Sequence (2006) which was on the 2nd level. Also Band (2006). His newer stuff was more interesting to me, probably because as he's gained more money and admiration he has been able to make such ridiculously big pieces.

anyone who will be in new york before the exhibition ends should definitely go.

well I was at SF MOMA recently and found myself starring at a plain white canvas...COME ON that's just LAZY...at least slop some color on there.

Just because it's art doesn't mean it has to be good or anything.

Was it Robert Irwin? I saw him speak in college and he rocks.

It's art. You can't even tell the complexities of the angles and arcs until you are standing next to it. I have no idea how he even made them without using a computer program to calculate the angles. Some of them looked as though they shouldn't even be able to stand up, but they do.

White convas covered in white paint is still art. The only art I can't get into is found object art. With modern art it also helps to know something about the artist and know the basic history of modern art, since a lot of it builds on other artists/concepts.

Plus, if the creator says it's art, it's art. Just like if a writer says a 80 page piece is a "short story" and not a novella, then it's a short story. Doesn't mean you have to like or get it.

i got to visit the FMA (Forkers Museum of Art) in my pajamas this morning.

btw- i love jackson pollock. whos with me?

Pollock = meh.
Sera = s'ok. I think he's more interesting than Pollock, but maybe that's because so many people have copied Pollock. I wouldn't write home about either of them, but I do like modern art. The Modern in Madrid is by far the coolest one I've been to.

I freaking HATE that Kandinsky piece, but that's only because it used to hang in the conference room in my old building and it seems to - inauthentic to have it there. So we could be all inspired and shit when we had our monthly metrics meetings and talked about new product launches.
